Kuwait joins Arab efforts to accelerate establishment of common electricity market

Kuwait participated in the 17th meeting of the Committee of Electricity Experts in Arab Countries, which is examining ways to accelerate the establishment of the Arab Common Electricity Market and strengthen electrical integration among Arab states.
According to a statement by the Arab League, the meeting is reviewing progress toward signing and ratifying two agreements underpinning the proposed market, the General Agreement and the Market Agreement.
The discussions also cover ways to encourage public and private investment in major electricity generation and transmission projects of regional importance. Such projects are expected to support job creation and sustainable development efforts across the Arab region.
The committee is also reviewing developments in a pilot energy-exchange project involving Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Egypt. The initiative is intended to serve as a nucleus for expanding electricity trade among Arab countries on commercial and economic grounds.
The agenda further includes consideration of participation in a workshop to be held in cooperation with the Association of Mediterranean Electricity Transmission Network Operators. The workshop, titled “Data for Regional Integration and Regulatory Barriers,” will address mechanisms for exchanging technical data and overcoming regulatory obstacles to electrical interconnection.
Kuwait is represented at the meeting by a delegation from the Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy, including Assistant Undersecretary for Electricity Transmission Networks Engineer Faisal Al-Sumait and Director of the Planning and Follow-up Department for Electricity Transmission Networks Engineer Ahmed Al-Sumairi.
