Kuwait extends financial grant for Bangladesh’s Rohingya refugees

The Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development signed a grant agreement with the United Nations High Commissioner for refugees in Bangladesh, whereby the Fund will provide a grant of $2 million.

This will contribute in supporting the project meant to improve the living conditions of Rohingya refugees in the Republic of Bangladesh.

The grant agreement was signed on behalf of the Kuwait Fund by its acting Director General, Waleed Al-Bahar, and on behalf of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees by its representative in Kuwait, Nisreen Rabian.

The project aims to improve the living conditions and raise the level of safety and public health of Rohingya refugees residing in the Cox’s Bazar camp in Bangladesh.

The grant will ensure provision of basic building materials for renovation of refugee housing, and also provide Liquefied Petroleum Gas for cooking purposes, for approximately 18,000 families spanning a period of 12 months.

The number of direct beneficiaries of the project components is estimated at approximately 140,000 people.

This is the sixth contribution between the two parties in the field of humanitarian support and the first of its kind in the field of improving the living conditions of Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh.

With the signing of this grant, the total grants provided to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees since the first cooperation between the two parties in 2016, amounts to approximately $22 million.
