Kuwait expands smart meter installation in key sectors to curb energy waste

The Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy has confirmed that the ministry is pressing ahead with the installation of smart meters across the agricultural, industrial, and commercial sectors.

According to Al-Jarida daily, the initiative is being carried out in coordination with the Public Authority for Agriculture Affairs and Fish Resources, the Public Authority for Industry, and the Ministry of Commerce with the aim to promote energy conservation and improve overall efficiency in resource usage.

Teams from the Electricity Department, according to the sources, are currently operating in the Al-Wafra area, working on farms in collaboration with the Public Authority for Agriculture. These efforts are part of a nationwide plan to replace outdated mechanical meters with advanced electronic ones that offer precise consumption monitoring and better management capabilities.

The sources noted that more than 182,000 electronic meters have already been installed across Kuwait, marking a major milestone in the country’s digital transformation journey and its efforts to minimize electricity wastage.

However, the implementation process has not been without challenges. Some farm owners reportedly used guard dogs or other individuals to block technicians from accessing the premises, necessitating additional coordination with the relevant authorities and the farm owners themselves to complete the installations.

Despite these obstacles, the Ministry remains firmly committed to completing the smart meter rollout in all targeted sectors. Officials emphasized that the project plays a crucial role in reducing unnecessary consumption and easing the pressure on the power grid during peak hours, thereby contributing to the sustainability of the nation’s electricity services.
