Kuwait expands global reach with new international connectivity gateway
The Communications and Information Technology Regulatory Authority (CITRA) announced the launch of Kuwait’s new international gateway, the “Iraq Route,” in partnership with “Kims Zajil” Communications Company, enhancing international connectivity and transit.
In a statement to KUNA on Wednesday, 8th January, the authority highlighted that the “Iraq Route” offers an integrated land alternative to traditional sea routes, boasting low delay times. The response speed from Kuwait to the German city of Frankfurt is 78 milliseconds for a round trip.
The authority further stated that the cable capacity supports up to 100 gigabits per second, making it a reliable option for major companies and international service providers. This enables data traffic to be routed from Kuwait to Europe via Iraq in a safe and efficient manner.
This new route serves as an alternative to the maritime routes passing through the Red Sea, avoiding the challenges related to the maintenance of marine cables that can disrupt service. It also offers a flexible and secure solution for uninterrupted data transfer, thereby enhancing the reliability of Kuwait’s digital infrastructure.
The statement quoted the acting chairman of the authority, Abdullah Al-Ajmi, as saying that the “Iraq Route” enhances Kuwait’s position as a regional leader in secure and advanced digital communication. He explained that the project is a significant step towards strengthening national infrastructure and supporting economic growth and technological innovation.
Al-Ajmi added that local telecom companies have already begun benefiting from this new route to enhance the efficiency of their networks and reduce delay times, which in turn helps provide a better customer experience.
Importantly, Al-Ajmi stressed the Authority’s ongoing commitment to developing Kuwait’s digital infrastructure and strengthening its leading role in the global digital economy. This will be achieved through the launch of more innovative initiatives and strategic partnerships aimed at supporting sustainable development.
Al-Ajmi explained that this strategic initiative was implemented in collaboration with the Iraqi Information and Communications Technology Company (ITPC) and with the support of the Iraqi Minister of Communications, Dr. Hiyam Al-Yasiri.
