Kuwait enters scorching 13-day heatwave as temperatures hit 52°C

Peak summer phase 'Fire of Summer' expected to last until August 10

Kuwait is currently experiencing the most intense heat of the year, as meteorologists warn that temperatures could climb up to 52°C during a 13-day peak summer period known locally as “Jamrat Al Qayz”, or the “Fire of Summer.”

According to reports from the Kuwaiti Meteorological Centre and the Al Ojairi Scientific Centre, this extreme heatwave began on Tuesday and is expected to persist through August 10. The phase, also referred to as “Al Mirzam,” signifies the hottest stretch of summer across the Arabian Peninsula, Gulf News reports.

Meteorologists explain that “Al Mirzam” derives its name from the star Sirius, the brightest star visible in the night sky during this period. It traditionally signals the start of date palm harvesting, a key seasonal event that reflects the severity of summer in the region.

Following “Jamrat Al Qayz,” the region will enter “Al Kulaibin,” a period marked by extreme humidity, before transitioning into “Suhail,” when temperatures gradually ease and the heat starts to subside.

Authorities are urging residents to take necessary precautions, limit outdoor exposure, and stay hydrated during this intense period.
