Kuwait condemns the Iranian attacks and affirms the state’s full right to self-defense

Kuwait is fully committed to its right to self-defense and to taking necessary measures in accordance with Article 51 of the UN Charter -- Ambassador H.E. Talal Al-Fassam

Kuwait’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Vienna, Ambassador H.E. Talal Al-Fassam, strongly condemned on Monday the Iranian attacks targeting Kuwait and its airspace over the past two days, stressing Kuwait’s full commitment to its right to self-defense and to taking necessary measures in accordance with Article 51 of the UN Charter.

This came during the Kuwaiti delegation’s address delivered by Ambassador Al-Fassam at the extraordinary session of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

In his address, Ambassador Al-Fassam said, “I am honored to speak on behalf of the State of Kuwait at this extraordinary meeting of the Board of Governors, given the serious developments that affect Kuwait’s security and sovereignty and cast a shadow over the security and stability of our entire region.

He added that the State of Kuwait condemns in the strongest terms the heinous Iranian attacks that targeted its territory and airspace over the past two days, which constitute a flagrant violation of Kuwait’s sovereignty and a blatant breach of international law, including the UN Charter and international humanitarian law.

He stressed that “what my country has been subjected to is an unacceptable and reprehensible aggression by all standards and cannot be justified under any pretext.”

He affirmed Kuwait’s full commitment to its inherent right to self-defense, based on Article 51 of the UN Charter, and to taking all necessary and legitimate measures commensurate with the nature and scale of this aggression, in order to safeguard its sovereignty, protect its territory, and ensure the security of its citizens and residents.

He explained that the State of Kuwait, as an active and responsible member of the international community, emphasizes that respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states is the cornerstone of the rules-based international order, “and any infringement upon these principles threatens regional and international peace and security and undermines efforts to promote stability in a region facing delicate and sensitive challenges.”

Al-Fassam expressed the State of Kuwait’s deep appreciation for the positions of the brotherly and friendly countries that were quick to condemn this blatant aggression and affirmed their full solidarity with his country.

He emphasized Kuwait’s complete solidarity with all brotherly countries that have been subjected to these attacks and its support for all legitimate measures they take to preserve their sovereignty, security, and stability.

He stressed that the security of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states is indivisible and that any infringement upon the sovereignty of any member state constitutes a direct threat to collective Gulf security.

Al-Fassam also emphasized the importance of the international community fulfilling its responsibilities in maintaining international peace and security, holding accountable all those who violate the rules of international law, and working to prevent the recurrence of such attacks that threaten the stability of the region and the security of its peoples.
