Kuwait committed to empowering women in sports locally and globally: Sheikha Jawaher

'Kuwait’s initiatives are aligned with CEDAW and the New Kuwait 2035 development vision'

Assistant Foreign Minister for Human Rights Affairs, Ambassador Sheikha Jawaher Al-Sabah, has reaffirmed Kuwait’s strong commitment to empowering women in sports and increasing their participation across technical, administrative, and field roles at both the local and international levels.

In her remarks to KUNA following her meeting with Christy Coventry, President-elect of the International Olympic Committee, who visited Kuwait to attend the 45th General Assembly of the Olympic Council of Asia, Sheikha Jawaher emphasized on Kuwait’s efforts to align with the directives of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, national legislation, and international obligations such as the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), as well as the country’s development goals under the “New Kuwait 2035” vision.

She warmly welcomed Coventry’s visit and congratulated her on her election, expressing pride in the visit as a reflection of Kuwait’s prominent role in international sports and its strong bilateral sports relations.

She also affirmed Kuwait’s full support for Coventry’s efforts to advance women’s sports globally, applauding her contributions to the cause and expressing confidence in the impact of her upcoming initiatives as IOC President.

Both sides discussed strengthening cooperation in promoting women’s sports, particularly by enhancing women’s representation in sports institutions and leadership roles — key to cementing women’s achievements and furthering their development across sectors.
