“Kuwait, Capital of Arab Culture and Media 2025” selection an invaluable national honour
The Minister of Information, Culture, and Minister of State for Youth Affairs, Abdulrahman Al-Mutairi, affirmed on Sunday, 19th January, that Kuwait’s selection as the Capital of Arab Culture and the Capital of Arab Media for 2025 is a significant opportunity. It highlights the country’s achievements in culture, media, and the arts, presenting Kuwait as a model for fostering cultural dialogue between nations.
In a statement by the Ministry of Information, Al-Mutairi emphasized that this event is a continuation of Kuwait’s pioneering journey in culture and creativity, as well as its efforts to promote dialogue and communication between nations. He attributed this achievement to the ongoing support of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Mishaal Al-Ahmad, His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled, and His Highness Sheikh Ahmad Al-Abdullah, the Prime Minister.
Al-Mutairi explained that Kuwait’s selection as the Capital of Arab Culture was made by the Executive Council of the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO), while its designation as the Capital of Arab Media was decided by the Council of Arab Information Ministers. These decisions were based on criteria such as Kuwait’s media infrastructure, its capacity to host major events, and its significant role in promoting Arab media.
The preparations for this major cultural and media event are currently underway, following the Ministry of Information’s strategy (2021-2026) and the National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters’ strategy (2023-2028). These strategies form the foundation for the event, with the cultural vision focusing on creating an environment that fosters creativity, while the media vision aims to build sustainable and pioneering media for the production of purposeful content.
Al-Mutairi stressed that the two strategies complement each other in developing media as a platform for promoting Kuwaiti and Arab culture, as well as spreading purposeful media content. He also mentioned the formation of a joint supreme committee between the Ministry of Information and the National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters to oversee the organization of events marking Kuwait’s role as the Capital of Arab Culture and Arab Media.
The key pillars for realizing Kuwait’s vision as the Capital of Arab Culture and Media include enhancing the country’s cultural and media status, promoting Kuwaiti culture, developing digital media, encouraging investment in cultural and media industries, supporting sustainable development, strengthening Arab cultural identity, and fostering international cultural interaction.
Al-Mutairi added that the plan for activities and events includes 37 initiatives aimed at enhancing Kuwait’s cultural and media status, seven activities focused on developing digital media, 20 activities to encourage investment in cultural and media projects, 12 activities supporting sustainable development, and 29 activities dedicated to enhancing Arab cultural identity and preserving heritage.
Thee events will feature approximately 98 activities spread over 235 days, showcasing the diversity of Kuwait’s cultural and media scene. This underscores the country’s ability to organize major events, including global and Gulf initiatives, aimed at enhancing cultural and media cooperation.
Al-Mutairi stated that some of the most prominent events to be held during the year include the Al-Qurain Cultural Festival, the Arab Children’s Theater Festival, the International Music Festival, and the Al-Arabi Magazine Festival.
Additionally, media awards and initiatives such as the Kuwait Grand Media Award and the Arab Media Forum will be organized, aiming to stimulate media innovation and honor outstanding achievements in the field.
Minister Al-Mutairi pointed out that the opening ceremony of “Kuwait, Capital of Arab Culture and Media” will take place on February 13, featuring the historic national theatrical performance “The Earth’s Ocean”. Additionally, a press conference will be held on January 26 to announce the details of the accompanying events.
