Kuwait assures stable power and water supply amid regional tensions

Systems operate at normal pace despite security developments as Kuwait activates emergency plan to safeguard power and water services

The Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy said the electricity and water systems are operating efficiently and are stable, with services continuing normally for citizens and residents.

Ministry spokesperson Fatima Hayat made the remarks on Saturday during an official media briefing reviewing the latest developments in light of the Iranian aggression against Kuwait.

Hayat said the ministry activated its comprehensive emergency plan on February 28 as an immediate response to regional developments.

The step, according to Al-Rai daily, reflects the ministry’s high level of preparedness and the readiness of national technical teams to implement emergency procedures to ensure the continued stability of electricity and water services across the country.

She explained that operational procedures under the emergency plan have been fully implemented, with emergency teams deployed to pre-designated locations and readiness levels raised in the production, transmission and distribution sectors.

Monitoring and technical follow-up systems have also been strengthened around the clock to ensure rapid response to any potential incidents.

As part of these precautionary measures, the ministry temporarily suspended certain routine maintenance work on distillation plants to maintain full production capacity and increase the country’s strategic reserves of fresh water.

Hayat also noted that shelters and accommodation facilities have been prepared at several ministry sites in coordination with the General Directorate of Civil Defense. Security support has also been requested from the Ministry of Interior (Kuwait) and the Kuwait National Guard to enhance protection for water and electricity facilities as part of efforts to safeguard vital infrastructure.

Since the beginning of the attacks, the electrical system has sustained limited damage caused by falling debris from operations to intercept drones. According to the ministry, 15 overhead power transmission lines were affected, along with a small fire in two fuel tanks at the Doha West Power and Water Distillation Station and the Al-Subbiya Power and Water Distillation Station.

Specialized technical teams quickly began inspection and repair work in coordination with security authorities. Eleven transmission lines have already been repaired and returned to service, while work continues on the remaining lines.

The fires at the two fuel tanks were contained rapidly by station safety and emergency teams without any human injuries, with the damage limited to minor material losses. Operations at the Doha West station have since resumed.

Hayat stressed that the ministry remains committed to transparency by providing regular updates to the public and ensuring the flow of accurate information.

She also called on citizens and residents to rationalize electricity and water consumption, emphasizing that responsible use of resources helps maintain infrastructure efficiency and ensures the sustainability of services during the current circumstances.
