Kuwait approves BESS battery energy storage sites in Al-Mutla’a, Jaber Al-Ahmad

Cabinet committee moves ahead with 1,500MW energy storage project to strengthen power grid

Kuwait has taken a significant step toward strengthening its electricity infrastructure after the Cabinet Services Committee approved sites for a major Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in Al-Mutla’a and Jaber Al-Ahmad residential cities.

The approved locations have been formally handed over to the Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy, with coordination ongoing among relevant authorities to complete technical and regulatory requirements for the project.

The decision follows discussions by the Public Services Committee regarding an alternative land request from the Public Authority for Sports, after previously allocated sites were reassigned for the energy storage project.

Authorities stressed the importance of continued coordination to finalise an alternative site for the sports authority in Jaber Al-Ahmad City and complete the necessary administrative and technical procedures.

The move comes in line with earlier Cabinet directives issued in November, instructing the Public Authority for Housing Welfare, in coordination with the Public Authority for Sports and other entities, to identify replacement land in exchange for areas allocated to the electricity storage project.

According to informed sources, the Ministry of Electricity has made substantial progress on the project, which is expected to play a key role in supporting the national power grid during peak summer demand periods starting in 2027.

The project will provide a total storage capacity of around 1,500 megawatts, to be implemented in phases, with the first phase contributing 500 megawatts of stored energy to the grid.
