Kuwait affirms commitment to advancing and promoting human rights

The Deputy Foreign Minister Ambassador Sheikh Jarrah Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, on Tuesday, emphasized Kuwait’s commitment to promoting and protecting human rights, highlighting their close link to sustainable development. He also reaffirmed Kuwait’s dedication to submitting its national reports to relevant regional and international bodies.

In his opening speech at the 55th ordinary session of the Arab Permanent Committee on Human Rights, hosted by Kuwait for two days, Sheikh Jarrah Al-Sabah stated that the State of Kuwait looks forward to submitting its second national report to the Arab Charter on Human Rights Committee and reviewing its fourth national report within the universal periodic review mechanism of the Human Rights Council in Geneva. This reflects Kuwait’s commitment to developing its national human rights system.

Sheikh Jarrah Al-Sabah explained that Kuwait’s hosting of this meeting aligns with its humanitarian diplomacy, a fundamental pillar of the country’s foreign policy. He also highlighted Kuwait’s commitment to supporting human rights issues, particularly in light of its membership in the Human Rights Council for the 2024-2026 period.

Moreover, Sheikh Jarrah Al-Sabah stated that Kuwait’s hosting of the meeting reflects its ongoing efforts, under the wise leadership of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Mishaal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, and His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Khalid Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, to strengthen and promote human rights, achieve justice and equality, and protect the dignity and well-being of individuals.

Sheikh Jarrah Al-Sabah highlighted the current challenges facing the region, particularly the humanitarian crises stemming from armed conflicts. He pointed to the tragic conditions endured by the Palestinian people, including genocide, forced displacement, the targeting of unarmed civilians, hospitals, schools, and vital infrastructure, as well as the use of starvation as a weapon of war. These actions, he stated, are blatant violations of international law, international humanitarian law, and Security Council resolutions.

Furthermore, Sheikh Jarrah Al-Sabah called on the international community to take immediate action to support a permanent ceasefire and ensure the full implementation of its terms, as well as to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid. He reaffirmed Kuwait’s historical and principled position in support of the Palestinian people, emphasizing their right, like all peoples, to live with dignity and freedom and to establish an independent state on their land, with East Jerusalem as its capital, within the borders of June 4, 1967.

Sheikh Jarrah Al-Sabah emphasized Kuwait’s determination to continue its tireless efforts to improve joint Arab human rights work and support initiatives within the framework of the parent committee of the Arab Human Rights Organization, established in 1968. He expressed hope that this meeting would result in effective and concrete recommendations that would support and strengthen the efforts and culture of human rights across the Arab region.
