Kuwait achieves excellence in safety, security and conflict management

The country has achieved its target in the Global Peace Index as per a government report issued by the National Observatory for Sustainable Development and Future Foresight

  • Kuwait advanced four places in the Global Peace Index 2023, keeping second place in the Gulf and Arab region.

  • The Global Peace Index for Kuwait improved by 0.07, moving up 4 places globally.

  • Kuwait records a 25% decrease in violence’s economic impact from 2022 to 2023.

A government report issued by the National Observatory for Sustainable Development and Future Foresight showed that Kuwait has achieved its target in the Global Peace Index, particularly in the areas of community safety and security, and in managing ongoing local and international conflicts as outlined in the Third Development Plan.

The observatory report from the General Secretariat of the Supreme Council for Planning and Development made eight recommendations to promote peace in Kuwait. These recommendations are as follows:

  1. Media outlets should fulfill their role in promoting social responsibility, particularly in the security sector, and collaborate with relevant stakeholders to find common ground. They should also assess citizenship, loyalty, and social belonging.
  2. Scientific research institutions should play an active role by conducting field studies to examine the factors and causes of crime and should also propose effective methods for addressing crime that align with the principles and values of social responsibility.
  3. Emphasizing the cultural development of citizens, as the dissemination of knowledge is one of the most effective ways to reduce crime. Knowledge fosters higher values and morals, and establishing a comprehensive social system to engage youth during leisure time by creating clubs and programs aimed at reducing crime rates.
  4. Encourage and urge citizens to cooperate with security services in reporting and confronting crimes to reduce or prevent them from occurring.
  5. It is essential to foster fruitful cooperation with global civil society organizations to halt violence and wars and promote peace.
  6. Proposing comprehensive legislative and legal amendments to criminalize the carrying and possession of weapons, particularly bladed weapons. Increase penalties for self-assault crimes to achieve both general and specific deterrence in society.
  7. Strengthening foreign military relations to raise the level of international military cooperation, expand its fields, and continue reforms to stimulate the vitality of military diplomacy in protecting the state’s sovereignty and homeland security.
  8. Bolstering the fight against corruption, intensifying reform efforts, and establishing the principles of accountability and transparency are essential to create a safer and more secure society, which in turn supports the process of political stability.

According to the Global Peace Index report, Kuwait advanced by four places globally in the Global Peace Index 2023 while maintaining its second place among Gulf and Arab countries. The value of the Global Peace Index for Kuwait improved by 0.07, coinciding with a 4-place improvement in its global ranking.

The report also highlighted significant progress in Kuwait’s position on the impact axis, with the economic impact of violence increasing by 38 places compared to 2022.

According to the report, Kuwait achieved the largest improvement in the economic impact of violence, recording a decrease of more than 25% from 2022 to 2023. In the aspect of community safety and security, it changed by 0.069% from 1.762% in 2022 to 1.693% in 2023, and the enhancement of military capacity changed by 0.122% from 2.184% in 2022 to 2.062% in 2023.
