Kuwait accelerates China-backed development projects under Prime Minister’s directives

Prime Minister His Highness Sheikh Ahmed Al-Abdullah Al-Sabah has issued firm directives to ensure that no obstacles stand in the way of implementing development projects linked to Kuwait’s cooperation with the People’s Republic of China.

He also called for intensifying communication and technical coordination with the Chinese side to ensure that these projects are expedited and completed within the shortest timeframe possible, reports Al-Jarida daily.

These directives were issued when His Highness’s chaired the 14th meeting of the Ministerial Committee for the Follow-up on the Implementation of Agreements and Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) between Kuwait and China, at the Bayan Palace.

During the meeting, His Highness reviewed the current status and latest developments concerning a number of strategic projects that are part of the cooperation framework established through agreements and MoUs signed by the two governments.

Among the most prominent of these projects is the Mubarak Al-Kabeer Port, which is considered a cornerstone of Kuwait’s future economic and logistical infrastructure. The discussions also covered projects in the electricity sector, particularly in enhancing the power grid and supporting the transition to renewable energy sources.

The meeting further addressed cooperation in establishing a low-carbon green system focused on waste recycling, in line with global environmental sustainability goals.
Other key areas of collaboration include housing development, the expansion of environmental infrastructure particularly in relation to wastewater treatment plants, and the development of free and economic zones to attract international investment and diversify Kuwait’s economy.

In addition to reviewing the progress of ongoing initiatives, the committee explored new opportunities to deepen strategic partnerships with China. The aim is to accelerate implementation of these large-scale projects in alignment with Kuwait Vision 2035, which seeks to transform the country into a regional hub for trade, finance, and sustainable innovation.
Ambassador Samih Hayat, the Assistant Foreign Minister for Asian Affairs, who also serves as a member and rapporteur of the committee, presented a comprehensive briefing on the current status of coordination efforts.

He emphasized the active engagement between Kuwait and China at both governmental and diplomatic levels. This includes continued dialogue with senior Chinese officials and regular consultations with the Chinese embassy in Kuwait to ensure timely implementation of all agreements and MoUs.

The meeting was attended by key government figures responsible for overseeing and executing the strategic initiatives. Attendees including Abdulaziz Al-Dakhil, Head of the Prime Minister’s Court; Abdullah Al-Yahya, Minister of Foreign Affairs; Dr. Noura Al-Mashaan, Minister of Public Works; Abdullatif Al-Mishari, Minister of State for Municipal Affairs and Minister of State for Housing Affairs; Noura Al-Fassam, Minister of Finance and Minister of State for Economic Affairs and Investment; Dr. Subaih Al-Mukhaizeem, Minister of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy; Sheikh Dr. Mishaal Al-Jaber, Director General of the Kuwait Direct Investment Promotion Authority and Counselor Salah Al-Majed, Head of the Fatwa and Legislation Department.

This meeting marked a reaffirmation of Kuwait’s commitment to advancing its strategic cooperation with China and underscored the leadership’s determination to remove bureaucratic obstacles, ensure seamless coordination, and implement projects that are vital to the nation’s economic future.
