Kubbar Island emerges as eco-tourism gem amid rising temperatures

As heat waves intensify across Kuwait, Kubbar Island has seen a surge in visitors, becoming a natural refuge and one of the country’s most sought-after summer destinations.

Known for its rich biodiversity, vibrant coral reefs, and protected status, the island is now being viewed as both a free summer resort and a model for sustainable ecotourism.

Experts highlight the island’s ecological and economic potential, while stressing the need for careful regulation and environmental protection to preserve its fragile ecosystem.

Key Insights and Highlights

  • A Natural Treasure Under Protection — Size: 75 km² marine reserve, under the Environment Public Authority (EPA).
  • Classification — Designated a protected marine area by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
  • Flora & Fauna — Home to coral reefs, nesting sites for four tern species, fish, turtles, and seabirds.
  • Eco-Tourism Potential — Offers diving, birdwatching, and marine exploration, especially during summer.

Jenan Behzad, Secretary-General of the Kuwait Environment Protection Society, calls Kubbar “a symbol of marine biodiversity in Kuwait.”

It enhances local employment, small businesses, and environmental awareness; but faces threats from rising sea levels, coral bleaching, and coastal erosion.

Experts recommend visitor capacity studies to avoid overcrowding, marine monitoring via GIS and remote sensing, creation of marine anchor zones to protect coral reefs from boat damage and stronger enforcement of environmental regulations.

Dr. Abdullah Al-Zaidan (Environmental Affairs Specialist) said, “Hosting visitors should not harm the environment. Services must respect the island’s ecological sensitivity.”

Dr. Mohammed Al-Sayegh (Environmental Consultant) added, “Enjoying Kubbar’s beauty starts with respecting it. Every conscious action preserves it for future generations.”

Jenan Behzad went on to say, “Small islands like Kubbar are key to ecotourism and sustainable economy. We must include them in national climate adaptation plans.”

Kubbar Island stands as a beacon of eco-tourism, where recreation meets responsibility. As Kuwait continues to develop its environmental and tourism sectors, Kubbar presents a unique opportunity to balance growth with conservation—preserving nature while enriching lives.
