KISR, EU, and Spain join forces to celebrate women’s role in the green economy
Forum brings together speakers and stakeholders from Kuwait, the European Commission, and Spain to honor and amplify the vital role of women in driving sustainable development across science, education, business, and community engagement

In celebration of Kuwait Women’s Day and as part of Europe Month activities, the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR), in collaboration with the Delegation of the European Union to Kuwait, the Embassy of the Kingdom of Spain, and the EU-GCC Cooperation on Green Transition Project, hosted a landmark event titled “Empowering Women in the Green Transition: Science, Society & Skills.”
The forum brought together distinguished speakers and stakeholders from Kuwait, the European Commission, and Spain to honor and amplify the vital role of women in driving sustainable development across science, education, business, and community engagement—both within Kuwait and across the European Union.
The event commenced with the opening of the “GEAS: Women Who Study the Earth” exhibition by the Geological Society of Spain. The exhibition spotlighted pioneering contributions by women in geosciences and environmental leadership, underscoring the global impact of female experts in earth sciences.
In his welcome address, Dr. Faisal S. AlHumaidan, Acting Director General of KISR, reaffirmed the institute’s commitment to gender equity in scientific advancement.
“At KISR,” he said, “we believe that empowering women scientists and innovators is essential to achieving Kuwait’s environmental goals. By enabling their leadership, we strengthen the solutions we need for the challenges ahead.”
Her Excellency Anne Koistinen, Ambassador of the European Union to Kuwait, highlighted the EU’s dedication to gender empowerment and climate action.
“This event builds on our longstanding cooperation with various Kuwaiti institutions on the critical intersection between women and the environment. Empowering women lies at the heart of the European Green Deal and our global partnerships.
“Through inclusive leadership in science, innovation, and policy, we collectively advance toward a sustainable and equitable future — for Kuwait, for Europe, and for the world,” said the EU envoy.
H.E. Manuel Hernández Gamallo, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Spain to Kuwait, emphasized Spain’s active role in the initiative:
“Spain is honored,” he said, “to contribute to this dialogue. Women play a transformative role in the green transition, leading efforts in research, entrepreneurship, and policymaking.”
The day’s program featured a series of thought-provoking panel discussions addressing women’s leadership in environmental research, legal frameworks, green technologies, and social innovation.
Experts from Kuwait, Spain, and the EU shared both strategic insights and personal narratives, engaging an audience of students, academics, entrepreneurs, policymakers, and representatives from civil society.
The event concluded with a networking lunch, providing a platform for participants to connect, exchange ideas, and explore collaborative opportunities to strengthen women’s contributions to sustainability efforts both locally and globally.
The forum underscored a shared commitment between Kuwait and the European Union to promote gender-inclusive solutions in the fight against climate change, as part of the broader vision of New Kuwait 2035 and the EU’s Green Deal.
