KFAED signs $4 mln grant pacts with UN to support humanitarian efforts in Sudan, Yemen
Grants will support communities affected by conflict and displacement in Sudan and Yemen, while strengthening the capacity of international organizations to respond swiftly to urgent humanitarian needs.

The Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED) signed on Wednesday a memorandum of understanding and two grant agreements worth a total of $4 million with the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) to support humanitarian operations in Sudan and Yemen.
The signing ceremony reflects Kuwait’s ongoing humanitarian commitment and its firm stance on supporting nations facing crises. Acting Director General of KFAED, Waleed Al-Bahar, said in a statement to the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) and Kuwait TV that this initiative reaffirms Kuwait’s enduring approach to contributing to humanitarian and development efforts across the globe, reports Al-Rai daily.
Al-Bahar explained that the grants aim to support communities affected by conflict and displacement in Sudan and Yemen, while strengthening the capacity of international organizations to respond swiftly to urgent humanitarian needs.
He outlined that the Fund has allocated $3 million to the Sudan Humanitarian Fund (SHF), which seeks to deliver life-saving assistance, combat hunger, curb infectious disease outbreaks, assist displaced families, and ensure access to basic services in conflict-affected regions of Sudan.
In addition, KFAED is providing a $1 million grant to the Yemen Humanitarian Fund (YHF), following a similar framework to the Sudan initiative. The Yemen grant focuses on delivering life-saving aid and improving living conditions for vulnerable populations in areas severely impacted by the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
Al-Bahar further noted that the memorandum of understanding between KFAED and OCHA aims to deepen institutional cooperation and establish a coordinated framework to respond effectively to pressing humanitarian challenges in crisis zones.
For his part, UN Undersecretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Tom Fletcher, expressed appreciation for Kuwait’s continued leadership and generosity in the field of humanitarian assistance.
He commended the Kuwait Fund as a “pioneer and initiator in humanitarian work for decades,” adding that its consistent vision and commitment embody “the highest values of giving and responsibility.”
Fletcher emphasized that Kuwait’s example inspires OCHA to intensify its efforts to provide timely and effective relief for those most in need worldwide.
He voiced pride in consolidating the partnership between the two entities, which will serve as a foundation for implementing life-saving programs and initiatives in Sudan, Yemen, and other regions facing humanitarian emergencies.
The agreements were formally signed by Waleed Al-Bahar, Acting Director General of the Kuwait Fund, and Tom Fletcher, UN Undersecretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator.
The initiative highlights Kuwait’s enduring humanitarian diplomacy and its pivotal role as a global partner in alleviating suffering and promoting stability in crisis-affected regions.
