KEPS records hundreds of migratory birds during environmental event in Sulaibikhat
Environmental society highlights coastal protection through bird census event

The Kuwaiti Environmental Protection Society on Saturday organized the “World Winter Bird Counting Day” event at Sulaibikhat Beach, under the patronage of the Minister of Social Affairs, Family and Childhood Affairs, Dr. Amthal Al-Huwailah, with wide participation from government entities, civil society organizations and volunteer teams.
During the event, a specialized field team carried out monitoring and documentation activities that recorded large and diverse numbers of migratory and resident bird species, reports Al-Qabas daily.
Observations showed that the Red-legged Sandpiper topped the count with approximately 500 birds, followed by around 300 Crested Gulls. The team also recorded 200 Greater Flamingos, along with significant numbers of other species, including the Kentish Plover, Green-legged birds, and several wader and seabird species.
Additional sightings included groups of Grey Herons, Lapwings, and Black-legged birds, as well as smaller numbers of Common Sandpipers, Eurasian Cranes, Terns, White-cheeked Bulbuls, Eurasian Doves, Herons, and White-breasted Kingfishers. Rare individual sightings were also documented, highlighting the ecological importance of the area as a habitat for both migratory and resident birds.
On the sidelines of the event, Dr. Wajdan Al-Aqab, President of the Society, said the initiative forms part of the association’s contribution to international environmental activities aimed at supporting environmental protection efforts and strengthening community engagement.
She added that the event seeks to raise public awareness about the importance of conserving Kuwait’s birdlife and protecting natural habitats, particularly coastal areas.
Dr. Al-Aqab stressed that preserving and cleaning beaches and reducing waste—especially plastic pollution—are essential steps toward safeguarding biodiversity and ensuring the sustainability of coastal ecosystems.
