KCCC performs 11 complex surgeries during Oncology Workshop

Breast cancer remains the most common cancer among women in Kuwait, while colon cancer ranks first among men, followed by prostate and blood cancers, according to the latest data from the Kuwait Cancer Control Center (KCCC), said Dr. Amal Yousef, Consultant and Head of the Oncology Surgery Department at the center.
In a press statement, Dr. Amal noted a noticeable rise in thyroid tumor diagnoses, particularly among women. She explained that key risk factors include childhood exposure to radiation, genetic predisposition, advancing age, obesity, iodine imbalance in the body, and thyroid gland enlargement accompanied by antibodies.
She also highlighted that the center organized a specialized scientific workshop on head and neck tumors from January 4 to 8, with the participation of international experts from the United Kingdom and the United States, alongside leading physicians from various medical specialties, reports Al-Rai daily.
The workshop included discussions of 28 complex medical cases involving tumors of the jaw, facial bones, thyroid gland, and tongue. These cases were reviewed under a multidisciplinary approach involving surgeons, radiologists, radiotherapy specialists, chemotherapy experts, and pathologists, with the goal of developing optimal treatment plans tailored to each patient.
Dr. Amal added that medical teams carried out 11 delicate surgical procedures during the workshop, covering thyroid tumors, salivary gland tumors, jaw and facial bone tumors, and tongue tumor surgeries. She stressed that the operations demonstrate the high level of preparedness and expertise of the medical staff in handling intricate head and neck cancer surgeries.
