At least four people were killed and more than 30 injured after a powerful explosion ripped through a fireworks warehouse in Karachi’s Jinnah Road Thursday.
The explosion triggered a massive fire that spread from the warehouse to nearby shops and vehicles, shattering windows in surrounding buildings and sending pedestrians fleeing for safety, according to dw.com
Pakistani authorities said large quantities of raw materials used for fireworks were illegally stored at the site. Police have arrested two warehouse owners, with estimates suggesting more than 50 kilograms of explosive material may have been kept in the basement.
The incident follows a similar explosion in Punjab province in January that killed six people, renewing concerns about lax enforcement of safety laws in Pakistan’s commercial hub of over 20 million residents.
