Japan–Kuwait ties enter new phase; from Tokyo to Kuwait, Wagyu lands in Kuwait

. . . as relations sizzle to new heights; expands bilateral horizons

The Times Kuwait Report

Japan has begun exporting premium Wagyu beef to Kuwait, Japanese Ambassador Kenichiro Mukai announced, marking another milestone in the rapidly expanding partnership between the two countries.

Speaking during Japan’s National Day celebration hosted by the Japanese Embassy, the ambassador said the agreement, reached in 2025, has now materialized, bringing the world-renowned Japanese delicacy to Kuwaiti consumers.

“Many of my Kuwaiti friends used to ask when they could taste Wagyu in Kuwait — today, it is finally available,” he said, inviting guests to experience Japanese cuisine, including Wagyu and traditional washoku dishes.

Acting Deputy Foreign Minister Ambassador H.E. Aziz Al-Daihani described Kuwait–Japan relations as historic and strategic, dating back to 1961, and characterized by deep-rooted cooperation across multiple sectors.

He noted that Japanese companies were present in Kuwait even before formal diplomatic ties were established, reflecting early trust and economic partnership. Cooperation today spans investment, trade, and development, with Kuwait taking pride in its long-standing friendship with Japan.

Al-Daihani also highlighted Kuwait’s active diplomatic role, pointing to the country’s growing profile as a hub for regional and international dialogue.

2025: A Turning Point

Ambassador Mukai said 2025 marked a major leap in bilateral ties, highlighted by the visit of His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah to Japan, during which relations were elevated to a “Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.”

The visit included meetings with Emperor Naruhito and Japan’s Crown Prince, strengthening ties between the Japanese Imperial Family and Kuwait’s leadership.

The Crown Prince also visited Expo Osaka 2025, where Kuwait’s pavilion drew strong public interest and won a Silver Award at BrandEx 2026 in the architecture category.

The ambassador also noted the imperial decoration awarded to Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammad Al-Sabah in recognition of his role in strengthening ties during challenging periods.

Future Cooperation: Energy, AI, and Technology

Looking ahead, Mukai said 2026 will see expanded cooperation not only through official visits but also in culture, sports, energy, clean power, water technologies, AI, cybersecurity, and advanced technologies, aligning with Kuwait Vision 2035.

He encouraged greater Kuwaiti investment in Japan to deepen collaboration in these future-oriented sectors.

Culture, Cuisine and Global Events

The ambassador highlighted the global popularity of matcha green tea, thanking a Kuwaiti partner for showcasing Japanese teas at the event, and introduced “Tenmusu” — shrimp tempura rice balls from Nagoya, which will host the Asian Games later this year.

He also pointed to the upcoming Yokohama Green Expo 2027, expressing hope for strong Kuwaiti participation.

The celebration featured traditional kimono displays symbolizing Japanese aesthetics, alongside Grand Seiko timepieces, reflecting Japan’s blend of heritage and precision craftsmanship.
