JACC launches first-ever summer theatre project: ‘Performing Arts Studio’

Offers participants unique opportunity to explore performing arts in professional and creative environment

In celebration of Kuwait being named the Capital of Arab Culture and Media for 2025, the Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Cultural Centre (JACC) has announced the launch of its first-ever summer theatrical initiative, the “Performing Arts Studio.”

This ambitious and interactive project aims to cultivate and empower emerging talent in the fields of theatrical acting and group dramatic singing, offering participants a unique opportunity to explore the performing arts in a professional and creative environment.

Directed by Abdullah Abdulrasoul and led in vocal training by Dr. Noura Al-Qamlas, the program begins its first phase this July and August. It is open to both aspiring performers and amateurs passionate about theatre, music, and stage performance.

Bader Al-Zawawi, Public Relations Officer at JACC, described the initiative as a key step in nurturing the next generation of Kuwaiti artists. “Through the Performing Arts Studio program, the centre aims to empower young talents, help them fulfill their ambitions, and offer exceptional opportunities to develop their skills, broaden their perspectives, and unleash their creative potential,” he said.

He highlighted the importance of the strong collaboration between JACC, the Ministry of Information, the National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters, and the Arab Theatre Authority, all of whom are vital partners in bringing this vision to life. Al-Zawawi also revealed that participants will engage in exclusive sessions with prominent actors to benefit from their real-world experience and artistic insights.

Director Abdullah Abdulrasoul explained that the studio’s program will unfold in three key phases, each focusing on different aspects of the performing arts. The first phase, currently underway, centers on building foundational skills in acting, choral performance, and expressive movement.

The program will culminate in a large-scale theatrical production titled “The Arab Theatrical Spectacle”, which pays tribute to the origins and evolution of Arab theatre. This finale will blend drama, group singing, expressive movement, and spectacle theatre, celebrating over a century of theatrical heritage in both Kuwait and the broader Arab world. The performance will explore the rise of theatrical troupes, popular dramatic forms of the 19th century, and Kuwait’s pioneering role in Arab theatre.

Abdulrasoul emphasized that the project is designed to offer “a creative, interactive, and productive environment for amateurs and talents, introducing new experimental forms of musical theatre that reflect both artistic heritage and modern performance styles.”

For her part, Dr. Noura Al-Qamlas highlighted the significance of group singing as a unifying art form. “Collective vocal performance is a language of harmony, dialogue, and peace. It fosters cultural exchange and introduces audiences to diverse musical perspectives,” she said.

Her training program focuses on the musical-dramatic connection, teaching participants essential vocal techniques such as breath control, articulation, and emotional expression. “The sessions will include both theoretical instruction and practical application, with the ultimate goal of contributing to the final musical theatre production,” she added.

The Performing Arts Studio is more than a seasonal program—it marks a strategic cultural investment in the future of Kuwait’s artistic scene. By offering hands-on training, mentorship, and performance opportunities, the Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Cultural Centre is paving the way for youth empowerment, artistic innovation, and a revival of musical theatre in the Arab world.

With the spotlight on Kuwait in 2025, this initiative positions the country at the forefront of Arab cultural expression—fostering a generation of artists ready to take center stage.
