Jaber Hospital performs complex hip replacement using 3D printing technology
A medical team at Jaber Hospital has successfully performed a complex hip joint reconstruction and replacement on a 48-year-old patient using 3D printing technology for precise surgical planning.
The operation was led by Dr. Hashem Al-Ali, head of the hospital’s Orthopedic Surgery Department, and marked the first procedure of its kind at Jaber Hospital using Cup-Cage Construct technology.
The patient had previously experienced failure of a hip joint, along with complications caused by mineral deposition and significant loss of pelvic bone. These complications required advanced surgical planning tailored to the complexity of the case.
The medical team used CT scans and 3D printing technology to create a model matching the patient’s pelvis before surgery. This enabled doctors to accurately assess areas of bone loss and defects and determine the most suitable surgical approach before the procedure.
Based on the pre-operative planning, the team carried out an advanced reconstructive procedure involving bone grafting and Cup-Cage Construct technology, which is designed to provide the required joint stability and support long-term bone fusion.
The operation was successful, with the patient able to stand and move and beginning to walk on the second day after surgery, indicating early recovery following the intervention.
The procedure reflects the continued development of orthopedic and joint surgery and the use of modern technologies in surgical planning.
