Israeli hostages, Palestinian detainees to be exchanged within 72 hours

A Hamas source familiar with the Cairo negotiations told AFP that the exchange of Israeli hostages held in Gaza and Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons is expected to take place within the first 72 hours of implementing the agreement reached early Thursday morning.

The source confirmed that the first phase of the agreement includes the release of living Israeli hostages in Gaza and more than 2,000 Palestinian detainees held in Israeli prisons.

Details of the Palestinian prisoners to be released include 250 serving life sentences and 1,700 arrested after October 7, 2023. The source noted that the first phase will also involve scheduled Israeli withdrawals as part of the implementation plan.

Meanwhile, the Israeli army announced on Thursday that its forces are preparing to redeploy in Gaza following a ceasefire agreement.

The army said in a statement that it “has begun field preparations in preparation for implementing the agreement… Arrangements are underway to develop a combat plan for the imminent transition to modified deployment lines.”
