Iraq begins ‘Faw Port’ operation ahead of schedule

Iraq announced the successful docking of its first commercial ship at the Grand Faw Port. Additionally, the Iraqi government has received five new berths from the Korean company managing the project, and is currently studying the necessary requirements to fully operate the port.

The Iraqi Prime Minister, H. E. Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani stated that the Faw Port is a significant development project, not just a facility for unloading goods.

In addition, Al-Sudani highlighted that the port’s opening has been expedited ahead of its planned schedule for next year, thanks to the efforts and swift work of the project team.

Al-Sudani emphasized that despite regional and international challenges, these will not hinder the completion of the Faw Port project. The government has taken several steps to ensure its success, including preparing the railway project, both through the old route and the new development road.

As a significant disclosure, Al-Sudani stressed the importance of regional cooperation, particularly following the signing of the quadripartite agreement with Turkey, the UAE, and Qatar.

What’s more is that Al-Sudani considered the five docks to be the backbone of the Faw Port, and emphasized that the development road will serve as a vital artery, connecting most countries in the region.

On a concluding note, Al-Sudani pointed out that the project will transform Iraq from a country reliant on other nations’ ports, into a maritime nation with full access to the Gulf.
