Iran warns U.S. against ‘being dragged back into quagmire’

Attacks on ships and key energy installation are testing the cease-fire as both sides warned the other against resuming conflict

Iran’s foreign minister issued a warning to the U.S. about getting drawn back into conflict, after Tehran carried out a series of strikes that tested a shaky four-week cease-fire.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Gen. Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, are set to hold a press briefing at 8 a.m. ET, (3:00 p.m. Kuwait time) after a U.S. effort to help vessels through the Strait of Hormuz prompted Iranian strikes on ships and a key energy installation, WSJ reports.

The U.A.E. said it had intercepted Iranian missiles and drones and confirmed a strike sparked a fire at the crucial oil hub of Fujairah, which it has used to pump much of its crude output around Iran’s chokehold on the strait.

Iranian missiles and other projectiles targeted U.S. warships and commercial vessels, according to Adm. Brad Cooper, head of U.S. Central Command.

Additional ships are “en route” to transit the strait after U.S. military forces successfully guided two U.S.-flagged commercial vessels through the vital waterway, he added.

The U.S. said it destroyed six Iranian small attack boats. Iran denied that, saying the U.S. destroyed civilian vessels.

Trump called on South Korea to join the fight in the strait, after Iran fired on a South Korean cargo ship.

A unit of Abu Dhabi’s state-owned oil and gas giant said one of its crude oil tankers was struck by Iranian drones.

The Israeli military is on high alert following the Iranian attack on the U.A.E., an Israeli military official said.
