Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a warm reception upon his arrival in Tianjin, China, marking his first visit to Beijing in over seven years. The trip comes at a crucial time, as global attention turns to the shifting dynamics of India-US ties in the wake of Washington’s tariff policies.
PM Modi is in China at the invitation of President Xi Jinping to attend the August 31–September 1 Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit.
During the summit, he is scheduled to meet President Xi, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and other key leaders on the sidelines.
The Modi-Xi meeting is expected to center on strengthening India-China economic ties and exploring ways to further normalize relations strained by the eastern Ladakh border row.
This visit gains added significance as it comes amid a downturn in India-US relations due to former US President Donald Trump’s tariff policies, which have disrupted trade and impacted major economies worldwide.
