Indian Learners’ Own Academy celebrates student democracy through elections

“Democracy cannot succeed unless those who express their choices are prepared to choose wisely. The real safeguard of democracy, therefore, is education.”

With this guiding principle, Indian Learners’ Own Academy (ILOA) proudly hosted its Annual Student Democratic Club Elections recently, turning the school premises into a hub of democratic spirit, enthusiasm, and responsible citizenship.

The elections were a milestone event for students from Grades 6 to 12, who actively participated by casting their votes using an electronic voting system—a deliberate initiative to replicate the mechanisms of national and global electoral systems. This simulation not only familiarized students with the procedures of a democratic setup but also encouraged civic engagement and electoral literacy, core pillars of any progressive society.

The election process began nearly a month in advance, when aspirants from different grades submitted their nominations for a total of twelve leadership positions. These prestigious roles included – President, Head Boy / Head Girl. Vice Head Boy / Vice Head Girl, Sports Captain Boy / Girl and as well as other key posts forming the Student Cabinet.

Nominees were rigorously evaluated and shortlisted by the Vice Principals, based on a blend of scholastic achievements, co-scholastic involvement, personal attributes, and a demonstrated sense of responsibility and leadership potential.

Once selected, the candidates were given the opportunity to campaign across the campus, presenting their manifestos, sharing their visions, and winning the hearts and minds of their fellow students. Posters, speeches, and interactive sessions filled the days leading up to the election, making the school environment charged with anticipation and political vibrancy.

On the day of the elections, students arrived at their designated voting stations with enthusiasm and a sense of purpose. Through electronic voting machines, they cast their ballots in favor of the candidates they believed best represented the qualities of a leader. The use of this modern voting technology aimed to prepare students for the future of digital democracy, ensuring that they are informed and tech-savvy citizens.

The final count revealed a list of dedicated and deserving student leaders, chosen through majority vote, who will serve as the representatives of their peers for the 2025–2026 academic session. Their journey now begins—to lead, represent, and contribute meaningfully to the student community at ILOA.

This democratic exercise was not merely a school event, but a valuable educational experience that empowered students with practical knowledge of how democracy functions. It instilled in them core democratic values such as fairness, transparency, responsibility, and the power of informed choice.

By conducting elections in such a well-structured, inclusive, and technologically advanced manner, Indian Learners’ Own Academy reaffirmed its commitment to nurturing future leaders—individuals who understand the importance of civic duty and who are well-prepared to participate in and uphold the principles of democracy.

Congratulations to all the elected leaders and heartfelt appreciation to all participants, teachers, and coordinators who made this initiative a grand success. The spirit of democracy lives on at ILOA!
