Indian embassy celebrates Kerala Day
The Kerala Day celebrations in Kuwait not only honored the state’s cultural legacy but also highlighted the unity and diversity of India’s expatriate community.
The Indian Embassy in Kuwait commemorated Kerala Day on November 15, with a vibrant array of cultural performances at its auditorium. Kerala Day, observed annually on November 1, celebrates the formation of the state of Kerala, which came into existence in 1956 under the State Reorganisation Act.
The event showcased the rich heritage of Kerala through traditional, cultural, and folk performances presented by various Malayali expatriate associations.
The celebration began with an electrifying chenda melam (traditional drum performance), accompanied by a reenactment of a pooram festival. This was followed by captivating displays of Kerala’s martial art, Kalaripayattu, and the ritualistic art form Theyyam.
Other performances included popular dance and music forms such as Thiruvathira, Kerala Nadanam, Nadavili, Margam Kali, Duff Muttu, Kolkkali, Vallam Kali, Oppana, and Ghazals, reflecting the diverse traditions of Kerala. Performers also presented the Kolunth Song, adding a unique musical touch to the festivities.
The event featured theatrical presentations, including skits and monologues, highlighting prominent historical figures from Kerala’s past. These included Maharaja Marthanda Varma, Pazhassi Raja, Kunjali Marakkar, Annie Mascarene, Dakshayani Velayudhan, Ammu Swaminathan, and Herman Gundert, bringing their legacies to life on stage.
In his address, the Indian Ambassador congratulated the Malayali community for organizing such a spectacular event and praised the performers for their outstanding contributions to the celebration.
Earlier, on November 8, the Embassy also celebrated the formation days of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, in collaboration with community associations representing those states.
