IMA Kuwait hosts interfaith dialogue and community gathering to mark India’s 77th Republic Day

The Indian Muslim Association (IMA) Kuwait, under the patronage of the Salsabeel Foundation, organized an interfaith dialogue and community gathering on Friday, January 16, 2026, at Chef Naushad Restaurant in Farwaniya, commemorating the 77th Republic Day of India.

The event brought together representatives of different faith traditions to discuss the theme, ‘Role of Religion in Nation Building.’ It served as a platform for constructive dialogue, mutual respect and shared national values, highlighting India’s enduring ethos of unity in diversity and the ethical foundations that have shaped its nation-building journey.

The program began with a recitation from the Holy Quran by Dawood Adsami and was convened by Pervez Hanif, who outlined the vision and community role of IMA Kuwait within the Indian diaspora.

Speakers from Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism and Islam shared insights on how faith-based values contribute positively to society.

Father James Tuscano, Principal of Don Bosco School, spoke about compassion, moral responsibility and selfless service, citing Mother Teresa’s life as an example of Christian teachings that promote care for the vulnerable and contribute to education, healthcare and social cohesion.

Dr Raghunandan Rayavaram, Community Secretary of the Forum of Indian Doctors, highlighted the Hindu principles of Dharma (righteous duty) and Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam — ‘the world is one family’ — describing them as pillars of India’s inclusive and pluralistic ethos.

Capt. Jagdeep Singh Rangi, Port Captain at KOC, emphasized Sikh values of equality, justice and seva (selfless service). Referring to the message of the oneness of humanity, he underscored the rejection of discrimination and played verses from the Guru Granth Sahib, creating a reflective moment for the audience.

Guest of Honor Abdul Aziz Al-Duaij, former Director General of IPC Kuwait, praised India’s progress despite its vast cultural, linguistic and religious diversity. He noted that India’s strength lies in its unity, moral character and the ability of its people to coexist harmoniously, commending the Indian community for upholding these values.

A highlight of the evening was a children’s patriotic segment during the rendition of ‘Saare Jahan Se Achha.’ Dressed in tricolour attire, children entered waving Indian flags and later distributed them to the audience, turning the moment into a collective expression of patriotism.

Professor Saleem Engineer, National General Secretary of the Forum for Democracy and Communal Amity (FDCA) and visiting scholar from India, delivered the keynote address. He linked religious teachings and moral philosophy to nation building, stressing that the true essence of religion lies in nurturing human character and ethical conduct.

He noted that when understood correctly, religion promotes honesty, compassion, discipline and social responsibility — essential qualities for a strong nation.

An interactive Q&A session followed, encouraging respectful exchange of views.

Shaikh Waleed Umri delivered the closing remarks and vote of thanks, expressing appreciation to the speakers, guests, volunteers and participants. The event concluded with a fellowship dinner, allowing informal interaction among attendees.

IMA Kuwait, a socio-religious organization operating under the patronage of Kuwait’s Ministry of Islamic Affairs, continues to serve the Indian expatriate community through programs that promote spiritual and social well-being.
