The International Criminal Court (ICC) on Friday dismissed an appeal seeking the release of former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, submitted on the basis of his advanced age and deteriorating health.
Duterte, who led the Philippines from 2016 to 2022, has been in ICC custody since March after being detained under an arrest warrant related to his controversial “war on drugs” campaign — a campaign that has faced widespread international criticism, according to news reports.
He continues to contest the charges and the circumstances of his arrest, but the Court affirmed its decision to keep him in detention as legal proceedings move forward.
