U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he “will decide what I believe is right” regarding a long-term resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Trump made a short trip to the Middle East on Monday to join regional leaders in signing a declaration aimed at solidifying the Gaza ceasefire after two years of conflict, according to Arab News.
Speaking about the decades-old dispute, Trump remarked, “Many people favor a one-state solution, while others support a two-state solution — we’ll have to see.”
He added, “I’ll decide what I believe is right, but it will be done in coordination with other states and countries,” during remarks to reporters aboard Air Force One.
Currently, about three-quarters of the 193 United Nations member states recognize the Palestinian state declared in 1988 by the exiled Palestinian leadership.
The U.S., a staunch ally of Israel, recently criticized the decision by several allies — including Britain and Canada — to formally recognize Palestine as a state.
