‘Hand-in-hand for a sustainable urban environment’: UN-Habitat, ASEAN join Farwaniya Governor in green initiative at Khaitan Park
The initiative represents a valuable contribution to local awareness, reinforcing Kuwait’s commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) during Urban October and reflecting the United Nations’ 80th anniversary vision — “Together for Peace, Development, and Human Rights.”

As part of efforts to promote the environmental and social dimensions of urban living, the Governor of Farwaniya, Sheikh Athbi Al-Nasser Al-Sabah, sponsored and attended a symbolic environmental initiative organized by the United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat) for Kuwait and the Gulf States, in collaboration with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

The event took place at Khaitan Public Park in the Farwaniya Governorate.
This initiative was part of Urban October and the “Kuwait Plants 8” campaign for 2025, aimed at enhancing the care of public open spaces, expanding Kuwait’s green cover, and highlighting the active contribution of UN-Habitat and ASEAN countries to Kuwait’s ongoing efforts to address the impacts of global climate change, achieve carbon neutrality, and support domestic eco-tourism.

The event featured wide community participation, including park clean-up campaigns, tree planting, service improvements, and environmental awareness activities—all emphasizing the importance of sustainable urban practices and green spaces.

In his remarks, Governor Sheikh Athbi Al-Nasser Al-Sabah stated, “This international and regional collaboration reaffirms that protecting our environment and creating welcoming public spaces for the community are among our top priorities.

“In the Farwaniya Governorate, we attach great importance to maintaining these public parks, which serve as daily recreational spaces for citizens and residents alike.
“We deeply value the participation of UN-Habitat, ASEAN member states, and all those contributing to this awareness initiative, which embodies Kuwait’s vision of promoting eco-tourism and advancing towards carbon neutrality,” the Governor stated.

For her part, Dr. Amira Al-Hassan, Head of UN-Habitat for Kuwait and the Gulf States, said, “We are proud of this partnership with the State of Kuwait and ASEAN countries in this community-driven initiative at Khaitan Park.
“Open public spaces are a cornerstone of sustainable cities — they foster community interaction and enhance environmental and public well-being.

“Kuwait’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality and developing model eco-tourism makes it a key partner in this initiative,” she stated.
Meanwhile, Ambassador H.E. Lena Mariana, Chair of the ASEAN Committee in Kuwait and Ambassador of Indonesia, expressed her gratitude to all who supported and participated in the “Hand in Hand for a Green Environment” initiative, especially Governor Sheikh Dhabi Al-Nasser Al-Sabah, noting that such dedication “is not unusual for a nation known for its generosity.”

The efforts of UN-Habitat in Kuwait span many years, focusing on sustainable urban planning, green infrastructure, and addressing the effects of climate change.
