Haaland joins Norway Chess to launch $2.7m global championship series

Football star Haaland makes strategic move beyond football, invests in Norway Chess, supporting the launch of the new Total Chess World Championship Tour—an initiative designed to elevate the global appeal of the game and make it more engaging for spectators.

The investment comes through a new company, Chess Mates, founded by Haaland in partnership with Norwegian business leader Morten Borge. The firm will take a significant ownership stake in Norway Chess, marking a major step in the evolution of competitive chess as a commercial and entertainment product.

Haaland expressed his admiration for chess, highlighting its intellectual demands and parallels with elite sport. He noted that both disciplines require quick decision-making, strong instincts, and the ability to think several moves ahead—qualities that define success on the football pitch as well as the chessboard.

Borge underscored the strategic nature of the game, describing chess as a reflection of long-term thinking and disciplined planning.

He pointed out that these attributes align closely with both high-performance sport and sound investment practices, adding that the partnership brings together complementary perspectives.

With millions of fans worldwide, Haaland’s global profile is expected to inject fresh energy into the sport and attract new audiences.

His involvement is seen as a key factor in expanding the reach of chess beyond its traditional base and into mainstream sports entertainment.

The Total Chess World Championship Tour, approved by FIDE, represents a significant innovation in the game’s competitive structure.

The tour will feature four tournaments each year, hosted in different cities, and will crown an overall world champion across three formats: Fast Classic, Rapid, and Blitz.

A pilot event is scheduled for autumn 2026, with the inaugural full season set for 2027.

Each season will include four events and offer a minimum annual prize pool of $2.7 million, positioning the tour among the most lucrative and high-profile competitions in modern chess.

Kjell Madland welcomed Haaland’s entry as a long-term strategic partner, emphasizing the commercial and promotional value he brings.

He expressed confidence that Haaland’s influence, combined with the tour’s innovative format, will help elevate chess to new heights and secure its place as a major global sporting spectacle.
