His Highness Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammed inaugurated the 12th British Week in Kuwait at the Capital Mall yesterday evening, joined by British Ambassador, Her Excellency Belinda Lewis, Deputy Foreign Minister Ambassador Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad, along with a number of Sheikhs, Ambassadors, and various dignitaries.
His Highness Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammed toured the exhibition, showcasing British industries, automotive, aviation, schools, and renowned international brands.
The UK Ambassador to Kuwait, Belinda Lewis, stated that they are proud to participate in the 12th Trade Fair ‘Britain in Kuwait’, which celebrates the ongoing friendship and strong relationships between the two countries.
In a statement to reporters, the UK Ambassador encouraged everyone to visit the exhibition and explore the pavilions that showcase various areas of cooperation between the United Kingdom and Kuwait, ranging from trade and investment to culture and innovation. She added that the British community is proud of its contribution to the development of Kuwait, and they look forward to strengthening this partnership in the coming years.
The Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the Exhibition, Ahmed Ismail Behbehani, stated that the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammed for the event confirms the depth and history of Kuwaiti-British relations and His Highness’ keenness to support events and activities that will strengthen the historical ties between Kuwait and Britain.
Behbehani added that Kuwaiti-British relations, which span 250 years, represent a distinctive model of cooperation built on solid foundations of historical friendship. This bond was solidified with the signing of the Kuwaiti-British Treaty of 1899 by the late Sheikh Mubarak Al-Sabah, which affirmed Kuwait’s independence and shielded it from major international conflicts.
Moreover, Behbehani emphasized that this year’s 12th British Week in Kuwait holds special significance as it coincides with the 64th anniversary of Kuwait’s Independence Day and the 34th Liberation Day, making the event even more meaningful for all those involved.
Behbehani stated that the British Week in Kuwait is one of the most significant economic events of the year, symbolizing the longstanding relationship between the United Kingdom and Kuwait. He emphasized that the success of previous editions has played a key role in boosting the demand for both British and Kuwaiti participation in this major economic event.
In conclusion, Behbehani also highlighted the historical significance of the United Kingdom’s support during the brutal Iraqi invasion of 1990, recalling the steadfast position of the late British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and the bond forged through the sacrifice of British and Kuwaiti soldiers on Kuwaiti soil in 1991, cementing the enduring and unique relationship between the two countries.
