Govt subsidized foodstuff seized at Al-Salmi Border crossing

Customs inspectors vigilance pays off

The General Administration of Customs has foiled an attempt to smuggle out of the country large quantities of foodstuffs, reinforcing state efforts to safeguard domestic supply chains and stabilize local markets.

The seizure happened at the Al-Salmi border customs port, where specialized customs teams detected irregularities and intercepted the prohibited cargo before it crossed the border.

The authorities confirmed that the confiscated items were seized, documented, and categorized in accordance with official inventory procedures, reports Al-Jarida daily.

Following the completion of all legal requirements, the seized food supplies were formally handed over to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, enabling the ministry to apply regulatory measures within its mandate, including oversight actions aimed at protecting food security and preventing market disruptions.

Customs officials stressed that the operation reflects the administration’s broader supervisory mission to curb the smuggling of government subsidized goods and commodities restricted from export.

These efforts, they noted, are critical to shielding consumers from shortages and ensuring that essential supplies remain available within the local market.

The General Administration of Customs reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining heightened vigilance at all border crossings, emphasizing continued coordination with relevant government bodies to counter smuggling in all its forms and to uphold the public interest.
