Full steam ahead: Kuwait-Saudi railway link ready to roll in 2028

The studies aim to reduce the 650-kilometer distance between the two friendly countries to a two-hour journey through the railway project.

  • The initial phase of the Kuwait-Saudi Arabia railway connection project study will finish within the next three months, reports said

  • The second phase, designing the railway link, will take a year, while implementation and construction in the third phase will require three years.

  • The project will boost trade, economic growth, and ensure safety for passengers and property between the two countries.

According to sources within the Ministry of Public Works, the initial phase of the Kuwait-Saudi Arabia railway connection project study will finish within the upcoming three months, as reported by Al-Anbaa newspaper.

They noted that this phase includes determining the route that will start from Kuwait in the Al-Shaddadiya area and pass through the city of Riyadh in Saudi Arabia.

The sources added that the necessary procedures and approvals for the first phase are currently being finalized.

The second phase involves the design of the railway link project between the two countries, which is expected to take about one year. The third phase concerns the implementation and construction of the project and requires approximately three years.

It is expected that the railway link project between Kuwait and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will be completed by approximately 2028. Sources state that the project aims to achieve safe and efficient railway transportation, enhancing the transport mechanism between the two countries. This, in turn, will boost trade exchange, spur economic growth, and ensure passenger and property safety.

The distance between Kuwait and Riyadh is estimated at 650 kilometers, which the studies will reduce to approximately a two-hour journey through the railway connection project.

The consulting fees for conducting the financial, economic, and technical feasibility study for the railway connection project will be split equally between Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, in line with the project stages and services provided. These fees will only be collected after both parties approve the outputs for each stage.
