France Congratulates Kuwait on National and Liberation Days

On behalf of France, and in my personal capacity, I would like to extend my most sincere congratulations to His Highness the Emir, Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, to His Highness the Crown Prince, Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, to His Highness the Prime Minister, Sheikh Ahmad Al-Abdullah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, as well as to the Government and the people of Kuwait, on the occasion of the National Day and the Liberation Day of the State of Kuwait.
The Liberation of Kuwait in 1991 stands as a defining chapter in our shared history, showing that, in decisive moments, the Franco-Kuwaiti friendship takes on its full strategic dimension. The international coalition, in which France took part alongside Kuwait and its partners, demonstrated exceptional unity and determination in defence of international law, sovereignty, and regional stability. France deployed more than 15,000 troops as part of Operation Daguet, supported by significant air and naval assets.
This mission did not end with the liberation of the country. In retreat, the occupying forces left behind a land threatened by epidemics and littered with mines and explosive devices that posed an immediate danger to the civilian population. It was while carrying out these vital clearance operations that several French combat engineers lost their lives in the line of duty. In total, sixteen French soldiers gave their lives, alongside their Kuwaiti brothers-in-arms, in the fulfilment of a mission that held, for them and for their comrades, a sacred character.
France’s engagement reflected its unwavering commitment to Kuwait’s sovereignty and security, and to the principles of international law. This shared sacrifice laid the foundation for a strong, lasting, and trusted defence partnership between our two countries.
Today, France remains fully committed to further strengthening its partnership with Kuwait, not only in defence and security, but also across all areas of our cooperation, including economy, culture, education, and innovation. Our relationship, built upon 65 years of official diplomatic relations and more than two centuries of friendship, continues to deepen and evolve in response to new challenges.
France is confident that our two countries will continue to work hand in hand to build a shared future founded on peace, prosperity, and sustainability.
