Fourth batch of household service workers attend baking scholarship

The initiative, consisting of 10 sessions with eight participants per class, aims to empower Filipino workers with essential skills

The fourth batch of Filipino household service workers in Kuwait held their baking session on Friday afternoon at the studio of Masterclass Lifestyles Workshops located at The Walk Mall in Salmiyah. Members of the State of Kuwait Lady Eagles Club visited the baking session and met with the scholars.

The three-hour hands-on scholarship program for Filipino domestic workers in Kuwait is a collaborative effort between the Migrant Workers Office, Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, and sponsors State of Kuwait Lady Eagles Club and OOREDOO. This initiative, consisting of 10 sessions with eight participants per class, aims to empower workers with essential skills. Through showcasing popular bread recipes, the program not only offers an opportunity to learn new skills but also provides valuable insights into starting a small-scale business, whether in Kuwait or upon returning home to the Philippines.

The three-hour session provided participants with ingredients, a fully equipped baking workshop, and a master chef to lead the class. Mariefe Torio, Masterchef and Trainer, emphasized that the class focuses on hands-on learning without the use of machines like mixers, emphasizing manual techniques to ensure participants learn the proper methods even without specialized equipment. The class showcases popular bread varieties such as Pan de Sal, Spanish Bread, Cinnamon Bread, hotdog and cheese breads, Dinner rolls, pizza crust, and more, offering a total of 40 varieties that can be made. Additionally, participants receive a complimentary SIM card from Ooredoo.

The scholarship program has benefited 350 domestic workers who attended the classes, with many choosing to complete the course due to their interest, passion, and encouragement from their employers. Former Philippine Labor Attache Nasser Mustafa initiated the scholarship program, with support from teams of recruitment agencies, generous donors, and sponsors.

Five batches have been scheduled, and the remaining five sessions will resume after the Holy Month of Ramadan, as household workers will be busy. Registration for the upcoming classes is still open, and interested workers may send a message via WhatsApp at 55650296. Masterclass Lifestyles Workshops is situated in the basement of The Walk Mall in Salmiyah.
