Former Indian Community School chairman Dr. K. V. Johny passes away

The Indian community in Kuwait mourns the passing of Dr. K. V. Johny in Kerala today. He was a distinguished physician, educator and community leader whose contributions to healthcare and community service will be long remembered.
Dr. Johny was widely respected for his pioneering work in nephrology and his dedication to advancing kidney care. During his tenure at Mubarak Al-Kabeer Hospital, he played an important role in strengthening renal care services and contributed to the development of dialysis and transplant programmes in Kuwait. His commitment to patient care and medical education left a lasting impact on the country’s healthcare sector.
Beyond his medical career, Dr. Johny was deeply involved in community initiatives. He was actively associated with the Association of Indian Professionals, where he mentored young professionals and supported initiatives that brought together members of Kuwait’s Indian professional community.
Dr. Johny also maintained a strong connection with the Indian education sector in Kuwait. He supported and encouraged educational initiatives at The Indian Community School, where he also served as chairman, playing a key role in guiding the institution and supporting its growth.
Following his retirement from Kuwait, Dr. Johny continued to contribute to the medical field in India through his association with VPS Lakeshore Hospital & Research Centre. At Lakeshore, he played an important role in complex renal transplant programmes, hospital governance and the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) committee, supporting the institution’s commitment to patient care and community service.
Dr. Johny is also widely recognised for leading India’s first successful kidney transplant team at Christian Medical College on February 2, 1971 — a landmark surgery performed on patient Shanmugam alongside Dr. Mohan Rao under the mentorship of Dr. Chaco.
A compassionate doctor, visionary academic and respected community figure, Dr. Johny’s legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched — patients he healed, students he inspired and communities he served.
The community extends its heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
