Five major projects to boost Kuwait’s power, water capacity by 7,000 megawatts
Energy Ministry stresses sustainability in upcoming power and water projects; Al-Khiran station to add 1,800 MW and 33 million gallons of water daily

Kuwait’s energy production projects are advancing at an accelerated pace to increase capacity and ensure sufficient electricity and water supplies for both current demand and future development.
The Higher Committee for Public-Private Partnership Projects recently approved the tender for the Al-Khairan power and water plant, which will generate 1,800 megawatts of electricity and produce 33 million imperial gallons of water per day. The tender is expected to be floated soon through the Partnership Authority.
According to the Ministry of Electricity, Water, and Renewable Energy, Kuwait is moving forward with five major projects to add nearly 7,000 megawatts of power and 213 million gallons of water per day. Some of these projects have already been signed, others are in the tendering stage, and a third group has reached the bid-opening phase, reports Al-Rai daily quoting energy sources.
The same sources explained that the Al-Khairan project, once awarded, will play a vital role in supporting production capacity, especially as urban expansion and new housing cities increase demand.
The project will be executed in two phases — the first will include the installation of power generation turbines and water distilleries, while the second will complete the combined cycle phase, using steam to produce additional electricity.
Officials emphasized that the project will comply with strict environmental standards, reducing emissions to levels below international limits.
The Public-Private Partnership Authority had earlier announced the results of the prequalification process for companies and consortiums bidding on the project, paving the way for implementation.
Major energy and water projects in progress include the North Al-Zour – Phases 2 and 3: 2,700 MW + 120 million gallons (signed); Al-Khiran – Phase 1: 1,800 MW + 33 million gallons (tender launch imminent); Al-Shagaya – Phase 3: 1,600 MW (tendered); Al-Subiya – Phase 4: 900 MW (tender opening stage) and the Doha: 60 million gallons of water (tendering stage).
