Final preparations underway to launch GCC–Iraq power interconnection via Kuwait
The Gulf Cooperation Council Interconnection Authority has held talks with a delegation from Iraq’s Ministry of Electricity to finalize preparations for the imminent launch of operations of the electrical interconnection project linking the GCC grid with southern Iraq via Kuwait’s Al-Wafra station.
According to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), the meeting, held in Bahrain, focused on operational readiness ahead of the project’s official start, as well as a review of operating agreements scheduled to be signed prior to the launch of the expansion phase.
The discussions also included visual presentations outlining the structure and technical characteristics of the electrical networks on both sides, in addition to initial frameworks for future power purchase agreements.
The project aims to export electricity from GCC countries to Iraq by connecting southern Iraq to the Gulf power grid, a step expected to enhance the stability and reliability of regional electricity networks.
Chief Executive Officer of the GCC Interconnection Authority, Engineer Ahmed Al-Ibrahim, said the meeting falls within the broader framework of the GCC–Iraq electrical interconnection initiative, one of the most important cooperative projects pursued by GCC states.
He noted that the link with southern Iraq, launched through the Authority’s Al-Wafra station in Kuwait, represents a strategic platform for energy cooperation and contributes to strengthening grid stability across the region.
