By CA Kaizar Shakir
Chairman IBPC
As Ambassador Dr. Adarsh Swaika concludes his tenure in Kuwait, the Indian community, business circles, and countless friends of India here look back with gratitude and admiration at the impact he has made in a relatively short span of time.
His posting to Kuwait came at a delicate moment — just as the world was emerging from the shadows of the COVID-19 pandemic. Kuwait, like every other country, was in the process of reviving its economy, rekindling international connections, and regaining momentum. At such a crucial time, Dr. Swaika’s arrival was nothing short of timely, bringing with him clarity, calmness, and conviction.

From the very beginning, his persona left an impression: grounded yet dignified, firm yet approachable, always polite, and always with a clear sense of direction. He understood not only the sensitivities of diplomacy but also the emotions of people. Whether engaging with ministers and dignitaries of Kuwait, or sitting across the table with business leaders, or addressing gatherings of the Indian community, his tone carried warmth and his words carried weight.
Strengthening Bilateral Relations
One of the hallmarks of his tenure has been the strengthening of bilateral trade and strategic cooperation between India and Kuwait. India and Kuwait share centuries of friendship, but partnerships need constant nurturing to stay relevant.
Dr. Swaika approached this with vision and persistence. He understood the economic potential that lay between the two nations and pursued it with determination.
The crowning jewel of this effort was the historic visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Kuwait — an event of immense significance, since it marked the first visit of an Indian Prime Minister in almost four decades. Organizing such a visit required precision, coordination, and relentless effort.
Dr. Swaika led from the front, ensuring every detail was attended to and that the visit reflected the growing strength of Indo-Kuwaiti ties. That visit did not just reaffirm friendship – it cemented India and Kuwait’s partnership on the global stage, opening new avenues of trade, investment, and cooperation.
A Steadfast Partner to Institutions
During his tenure, Ambassador Swaika placed immense faith in the Indian Business and Professional Council (IBPC). He did not just see IBPC as a community body, but as a genuine partner in nation-building and in representing India in Kuwait. His expectations were always high, but they came with trust.
When the Prime Minister visited, IBPC stood shoulder to shoulder with the Embassy. The same was true for the visits of the FIEO delegation, the Invest India mission, the NASSCOM delegation, and various trade promotion teams.
In every instance, the Embassy under his leadership made sure IBPC was an active part of the effort. This was not token involvement; it was meaningful partnership. It showed the Ambassador’s deep belief that together – Embassy, institutions, and community – the message of India could be conveyed with greater strength. For IBPC, this trust was both an honor and a responsibility, and it inspired us to deliver to the best of our abilities.
A Bridge Between Diplomats and People
Diplomacy can often seem like a world of protocol, distant and formal. Yet, Dr. Swaika brought a refreshing change. He was equally comfortable in the halls of ministries as he was in community gatherings. He listened, he advised, and he encouraged. He understood that the strength of India’s presence in Kuwait was not only in trade numbers and agreements, but also in the unity, reputation, and contributions of the 1-million-plus Indians living here.
At cultural events, business seminars, trade fairs, or academic exchanges, his presence was more than ceremonial. He was genuinely engaged, often taking time to interact with individuals, to appreciate efforts, and to guide initiatives. People noticed this, and they valued it. It is not surprising, then, that he became a diplomat loved not just by officials but also by the larger community.
His Style of Leadership
Every leader leaves a mark not only through decisions but also through style. What made Ambassador Swaika stand out was his ability to combine firmness with humility. He had a clear idea of where he wanted the bilateral relationship to go, and he never wavered from that vision. Yet, he ensured that the path was inclusive – bringing along stakeholders, listening to perspectives, and giving space for institutions like IBPC, business houses, and cultural bodies to contribute.
He often reminded us that India’s global image is not only built by policy, but also by the way its people conduct themselves abroad. He set that example himself, by carrying his responsibilities with dignity and modesty. That example inspired those around him.
Moments to Remember
There are countless anecdotes that those who worked with him will cherish. The long meetings during the run-up to Prime Minister Modi’s visit, where every detail was carefully examined and adjusted, yet always with composure.
The encouragement he gave to business delegations to explore opportunities and not hesitate in promoting India’s capabilities. The way he made it a point to recognize volunteers and community leaders for their contributions, no matter how small. These were not just official gestures – they were heartfelt acknowledgments, and they left lasting impressions.
Even during light-hearted conversations, his sense of humor and calm made interactions easy. He was never one to be overawed by ceremony, yet he ensured that the dignity of the office of Ambassador was always maintained. That balance is rare, and it is something that all who met him will remember.
The Legacy He Leaves Behind
As Dr. Swaika departs Kuwait, his legacy is clear. He leaves behind stronger bilateral ties, a foundation for deeper economic partnership, and a community that feels heard and valued. He leaves behind institutions that were strengthened under his leadership and a memory of a diplomat who embodied professionalism with humanity.
For IBPC, his departure feels personal. He was more than a guide; he was a partner. He believed in us, challenged us, and encouraged us to rise to the occasion. His confidence in our ability to deliver during crucial moments will always remain a source of pride and inspiration.
A Farewell, Not a Goodbye
While we bid farewell, it is not truly a goodbye. Diplomats, by the nature of their profession, may change locations, but the friendships and respect they cultivate remain. For the Indian community in Kuwait, Dr. Swaika will always be remembered as an Ambassador who served with distinction, who left his imprint on every sphere he touched, and who carried India’s image with grace and strength.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to him for his service, his guidance, and his warmth. We wish him and his family the very best for the future. To Nairobi now and then wherever next, we are confident he will continue to bring honor to India and to the noble profession of diplomacy.
Ambassador Dr. Adarsh Swaika will be deeply missed in Kuwait, but his contributions will continue to shape the path forward for Indo-Kuwaiti relations.
