Experts warn mouth health is critical yet neglected in diabetes care

  • Diabetes significantly increases the risk of tooth decay and gum disease due to high blood sugar.
  • Oral complications can worsen diabetes management and affect nutrition and self-confidence.
  • Research confirms a strong link between type 2 diabetes and severe dental decay.
  • Good oral hygiene and regular dental checkups are vital for preventing complications.

Millions of people living with diabetes experience oral health complications that frequently go unnoticed, despite their significant impact on everyday wellbeing. Experts note that while diabetes care typically focuses on organs such as the heart, eyes, kidneys, and feet, oral health remains largely neglected — even though it plays a crucial role in managing the disease.

Professor Aileen Paysan of Queen Mary University of London highlighted that the mouth is both affected by diabetes and can influence the condition in return. With high blood sugar compromising blood vessels and nerves, healing slows and infection risk rises, leaving the oral cavity particularly vulnerable.

Diabetes can cause a range of dental issues, including dry mouth, increased tooth decay, gum inflammation, bone loss around teeth, oral infections like thrush, taste changes, and difficulties with dentures. These complications may lead to tooth loss and negatively affect nutrition, self-esteem, and glucose control.

Recent research by Professor Paysan revealed a strong association between type 2 diabetes and severe tooth decay. Elevated blood sugar and altered saliva composition create conditions that promote destructive bacterial growth.

People with diabetes also face a higher likelihood of gum disease, and the relationship is bidirectional. High glucose levels feed oral bacteria, which produce acids that damage the gums. Once infection sets in, the bone supporting the teeth may shrink, causing looseness or tooth loss.

Experts stress that maintaining good oral hygiene, keeping blood sugar under control, and scheduling regular dental examinations are essential measures to prevent these complications and enhance quality of life for diabetic patients.
