EU vows to protect its interests as Trump hikes tariffs on European goods to 30%

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen responded firmly to the United States’ decision to raise tariffs on EU imports to 30%, a rate higher than what U.S. President Donald Trump previously indicated in April.

She stated that the EU remains committed to working toward a deal by August 1, but is also prepared to take “all necessary steps” to defend its economic interests, including proportionate countermeasures if needed, reports dw.com

European Council President Antonio Costa echoed von der Leyen’s stance, expressing support for the Commission’s efforts and stressing that “tariffs are taxes” that fuel inflation, create uncertainty, and undermine global growth. He affirmed the EU’s unity and readiness to stand firm in defense of fair trade.

Meanwhile, Germany’s leading industry body, the BDI, called for urgent diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the looming trade war.

Wolfgang Niedermark, a BDI executive board member, described Trump’s move as a “wake-up call” for both sides and urged quick solutions through objective dialogue.

The EU, which had anticipated the tariff hike following failed negotiations, is now confronting renewed trade tensions amid broader geopolitical and economic uncertainty.
