EU hails Di Maio’s strategic and successful visit to Kuwait

The European Union Embassy in Kuwait described the visit of the EU Special Representative for the Gulf, Luigi Di Maio, as “a success by all measures,” highlighting that it comes at a time when the European Union seeks to elevate its longstanding partnership with Kuwait to a strategic level.
In a statement, the EU Embassy noted that Di Maio was pleased to join Foreign Minister Abdullah Al-Yahya at an event organized by the EU delegation to mark the fifth anniversary of the opening of its mission in Kuwait. The Union also looks forward to commemorating the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the European Union and Kuwait in 2026.
As part of his visit, Di Maio toured Sadu House, where he was introduced to Kuwait’s rich textile heritage — a reflection of the country’s deep-rooted cultural traditions.
During the two-day official visit, Di Maio held high-level meetings with Foreign Minister Abdullah Al-Yahya, Minister of Oil Tariq Al-Roumi, and the Director General of the Kuwait Direct Investment Promotion Authority (KDIPA), Sheikh Dr. Meshaal Al-Jaber Al-Sabah. He also attended a working luncheon hosted by Deputy Foreign Minister Sheikh Jarrah Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.
This marked Di Maio’s fourth visit to Kuwait since his appointment in June 2023 as the EU’s first-ever Special Representative for the Gulf region.
Before departing, Di Maio expressed his satisfaction with the outcomes of the visit, saying: “I am pleased to return to Kuwait for these highly productive and important meetings aimed at advancing the strategic partnership between the European Union and the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council, including Kuwait. I remain optimistic given the clear political will and mutual commitment to furthering our shared initiatives.”
He emphasized Kuwait’s vital role as current chair of the GCC, noting its responsibility in driving forward the EU-GCC partnership.
Kuwait will host the 29th Joint Ministerial Council between the EU and GCC later this year, as well as the 9th EU-GCC Business Forum, scheduled to take place in Kuwait by the end of 2025.
