Electricity Ministry steps up efforts to tackle peak hour energy waste

As electricity consumption rates steadily rise, surpassing 13,600 megawatts yesterday due to high temperatures, the Ministry of Electricity is ramping up its efforts to curb waste and excessive usage, particularly during peak hours.
According to the ministry sources, the collaboration of various government agencies in adhering to the rationalization plan has played a crucial role in reducing consumption in these sectors. Ministry officials, including Minister Dr. Subaih Al-Mukhaizeem and Undersecretary Dr. Adel Al-Zamel, are closely overseeing the electricity and water rationalization initiative, according to Al-Rai daily.
Government agencies, factories, public benefit associations, and large shopping malls are all supporting the Electricity Ministry’s efforts to control consumption, especially in light of the extreme summer heat.
The ministry emphasized that any non-compliance with the rationalization guidelines would not be tolerated, highlighting the effectiveness of government cooperation in reducing waste. It also acknowledged the importance of continuing these efforts during peak usage periods.
The ministry is also targeting cryptocurrency mining, which consumes significant power. Sources revealed that eliminating this activity could save around 750 megawatts—equivalent to the power used by mining equipment and the cooling systems for the machines.
The ministry is coordinating with the Ministry of Interior and the General Authority for Communications and Information Technology to end unlicensed mining operations.
In addition, the ministry is working on new projects to enhance future electricity and water production capacity to meet the growing demands due to urban expansion and new development projects.
The ministry urged all citizens and residents to use electricity and water wisely, avoiding waste and extravagance, to help ensure the continued provision of services.
