The Egyptian Ministry of Interior announced today that a raid to thwart a “terrorist” plot attributed to the Hasm armed group resulted in the deaths of two militants and a civilian.
The ministry said in a statement during a raid on the “terrorists’ hideout” in the Bulaq al-Dakrour neighborhood near downtown Cairo, the ‘terrorists’ “initially fired randomly at the security forces and the surrounding area,” killing a passerby before both men were shot and killed.
The statement named five alleged plot leaders, all members of the Hasm movement, who have been sentenced in absentia to life in prison for carrying out a series of attacks since 2013.
The Interior Ministry said one of the suspects killed in the shooting had received advanced military training “in one of the neighboring countries” before entering Egypt “via the desert route” to carry out attacks.
The ministry’s statement came after a video clip circulated on social media this month showed militants training in a desert area, attributed to the Hasm movement.
