Dubai launches first test flight of electric air taxi, pioneering future urban mobility

In a significant leap toward the future of urban transportation, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) launched the first trial flight of the Joby electric air taxi, in partnership with Joby Aviation, a U.S.-based company renowned for its development of electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft for passenger transport. The test flight took place in a desert testing site in Dubai.

Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defense, and Chairman of the Dubai Executive Council, described it as a groundbreaking achievement.

He emphasized that the success of this trial is a direct outcome of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s vision to position Dubai as a global leader in future-ready, sustainable solutions through strategic innovation and partnerships.

The electric air taxi is part of a broader strategy to diversify urban mobility options, reduce traffic congestion, and support green transport initiatives. Joby Aviation’s air taxi is designed to operate with zero emissions and low noise, aligning with Dubai’s ambitions to be among the world’s most sustainable and livable cities.

Sheikh Hamdan also highlighted Dubai’s leadership in urban innovation, saying: “We aim to transform emerging technologies into services that directly benefit people. By integrating air taxis into our public transport network, we’re setting a new global benchmark for innovation-driven city planning.”

He added that Dubai’s approach is centered on designing a city that meets the evolving needs of future generations, opening new horizons for economic growth, tourism, and smart living. “Every initiative we launch is designed to enhance mobility, convenience, and opportunity—ensuring Dubai continues to be the world’s best city to live, work, and visit,” he said.

The successful trial flight is expected to pave the way for the commercial launch of air taxi services in the coming years, further strengthening Dubai’s position as a hub for future mobility and sustainable infrastructure.
