Drug cases drop 13.9% as Kuwait introduces tougher penalties

The resolute efforts exerted by the Ministry of Interior in enforcing the law and order and preemptive strikes against drug dealers and traffickers have resulted in tightening the noose around criminals and declining the number of cases.”
According to official statistics Kuwait recorded a 13.9 percent decline in the number of drug cases referred to the Public Prosecution in the first half of 2025, dropping from 1,709 to 1,471 cases compared to the same period last year.
A security source told Al-Qabas that the Ministry of Interior’s semi-annual report also showed a decrease in other crimes. Murder and assault cases fell to 182 compared to 193 in 2024.
Cases of kidnapping and holding ‘captive’ dropped from 202 to 176, while property related issues dropped slightly to 640. The report further revealed 153 cases of assault on honor and reputation, down from 157 in the same period last year.
A legal source emphasized that the continued decline in drug-related cases is likely to extend throughout the year, citing the tightening of penalties and recent legislative amendments.
Among them is a draft law that demands the death penalty for drug dealers who attempt to smuggle narcotics into the country, along with stringent judicial rulings that act as a strong deterrent.
The Ministry of Interior, through the Criminal Security Sector and the General Department for Drug Control, has also carried out targeted operations.
The Ministry reiterated its determination to continue its operations to safeguard society, stressing that public cooperation and reporting suspicious activities through the emergency hotline 112 remain vital in supporting security efforts and ensuring community safety.
