Donation campaign for debtors nears end with disappointing results

Donations collected from 20,786 people fall well short of the hoped-for 20 million dinars mark

The third national campaign to raise donations for paying off the debts of financially distressed people concludes tomorrow, Monday. Launched on March 14 by the Ministry of Social Affairs in collaboration with registered charity societies and foundations.

The aim was to rally nationwide support for debt relief but, the initiative has fallen well short of expectations. As of Saturday afternoon, the official online donation platform reported that a total 20,786 donors had chipped in with just 12.87 million dinars — well below the hoped-for 20 million dinars mark, according to Al-Jarida daily.

Minister of Social Affairs Dr. Amthal Al-Huwailah, in a recent meeting with heads of charity organizations, had voiced her disappointment with the campaign’s performance. She described the efforts of participating societies as “below the required level,” noting her surprise at the lack of broader engagement and stronger contribution.

The minister had anticipated more proactive involvement, which she believes could have significantly boosted the campaign’s outcome.
